Having a Mentor Changed Everything – Laura

From care to career – how guidance helped me thrive in the corporate world

Growing up in care, I learned early on to rely on myself. Independence was necessary, but it also meant that guidance and support weren’t always available when I needed them most. By the time I moved into the corporate world, I realised that ambition alone wasn’t enough. I needed someone who had been through challenges, achieved success, and could help me navigate the tricky parts of work and life. That’s how I found Drive Forward Foundation.

I first heard about them while I was at university in Manchester. A speaker came to an event I was working at, and something clicked. I knew this was an organisation that genuinely supported young people, especially those like me coming out of care. A few years later, I reached out for a mentor. That’s when I met Steve.

From our very first meeting, I knew this was going to be different. We sat down with a flip chart and mapped out my goals, my challenges, and the areas I wanted guidance in. I was looking for practical support—someone who could help me with career decisions, applications, and even understanding things I’d never dealt with before, like buying my first flat. Steve didn’t give me the answers – he listened, reflected back what I was saying, and helped me figure out my own solutions. It was exactly what I needed.

Over the months, our sessions became a mix of strategy, guidance, and honest conversations. When I bought my flat, for example, I turned up with all my mortgage papers and lease documents, feeling overwhelmed. Steve patiently went through everything with me, helping me highlight key points, ask the right questions, and feel confident in the process. That kind of support made a huge difference.

With Steve’s guidance, I achieved more than I expected in just a year. I doubled my salary, bought my flat, and gained the confidence to pursue ambitious goals I hadn’t dared to dream about before. But what’s been even more valuable is the sense of support and perspective he’s given me. Mentoring isn’t just about career – it’s about having someone to talk to, someone who believes in you, and someone who helps you see your strengths when you’re doubting yourself.

Steve has taught me that mentorship is a two-way street. While he’s helped me navigate my career, I’ve learned from him too – from his perspective, his experience, and the way he approaches challenges. Our sessions are a partnership, and that balance has made the relationship even more powerful.

If I could give one piece of advice to anyone thinking about getting a mentor, it’s this: go for it. Having someone invested in your growth can change everything. They help you see opportunities, navigate challenges, and achieve goals faster than you could alone. And for anyone thinking about becoming a mentor, you don’t need all the answers – you just need to listen, reflect, and be willing to share your experience. The reward comes from seeing someone grow and knowing you helped make it possible.

My journey with Steve and Drive Forward has shown me that mentorship isn’t just guidance – it’s empowerment. And it’s made me realise that no matter where you start, having the right support can help you reach your potential.
