My Journey with DFF: A Decade of Transformation

17 October 2024 • 3 min read

This August marked my ten-year anniversary at Drive Forward – a milestone that has prompted me to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve been on.

I vividly remember meeting Martha, our visionary founder, for the first time. Her passion for this cause was infectious, and it was clear to me that Drive Forward wasn’t just a charity, but a movement with the power to change lives. The opportunity to be a part of that was, and remains, something I was deeply excited about.

Over the past decade, it has been a privilege to witness the resilience, tenacity, and growth of the young people we serve. These are not just stories of hardship – they are stories of triumph, ambition, and the remarkable ability to overcome obstacles. Hearing about their employment journeys, often made possible through the tireless efforts of our team, has been the most fulfilling part of my role. Each young person’s success is a testament to what we can achieve when we believe in someone and give them the tools and support they need to thrive.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned during my time at DFF is that employment services work best when they are shaped around the young people themselves. It’s not about a one-size-fits-all approach; it’s about seeing the whole person, understanding their unique challenges, and building a trusting, tailored relationship. It’s this holistic, person-centred support that creates the foundation for real transformation – and it’s what makes DFF so special.

When I stepped into the role of CEO, I made a promise to myself: to uphold Drive Forward’s legacy and do everything in my power to leave the charity stronger than when I arrived. I am proud of the reputation we’ve built together, and I feel confident that I am handing over an organisation that is well-positioned for the future.

As I look ahead, my hopes for Drive Forward remain rooted in our mission. I hope that we continue to transform care-experienced lives and that our new CEO takes us to even greater heights. I have no doubt that our team will carry forward the same unwavering determination to be the difference in young people’s lives, day in and day out. Though my personal journey with Drive Forward may be coming to an end, I truly believe that the charity’s journey is only just beginning.

To the young people we serve: Your courage and resilience inspire me every day. Keep believing in yourselves, because we certainly believe in you. To the team: Thank you for your dedication, your hard work, and for always putting young people at the heart of everything you do. And to the new CEO: I wish you every success as you guide DFF into its next chapter – I’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines.
