Building Futures: Empowering Care-Experienced Youth Construction Skills

CSCS Course Ceremenoy February 2024

In February 2024, our long-term colleague, and Careers Manager Justin Sesay Barnes, led a two-week, in-house CSCS course designed to help young people obtain their Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Green Card. This certification is essential for anyone wanting to work on construction sites, as it demonstrates their understanding of health and safety regulations.

During the first quarter of this year, our course welcomed twelve participants, doubling the number of female attendees compared to our previous course in November 2023. The young people were required to start at 8:30 a.m., which was initially challenging for many who hadn’t had to wake up early since leaving school.

By the end of the first week, ten participants had passed their Level 1 Health & Safety qualification. On the Monday of the second week, the group toured a large Wates construction site in Pimlico, giving them firsthand experience of the health and safety practices they had been learning about. The following day, they were interviewed by various construction companies, and four young people received job offers contingent on their successful completion of the course.

We partnered with Wates Group, Runaway Training, Back2Work, Travis Perkins, and Ridge and Partners LLP to provide comprehensive support. This included a tutor, necessary qualifications, employability skills training, personal protective equipment (PPE), a job-ready toolbox, site visits, interviews with supply chain companies, and travel expenses.

By the end of the course, eleven participants had passed their Level 1 Health & Safety tests. Four had already passed the CSCS test, while the remaining participants were preparing to retake it.

Course Highlights:

  • Two participants achieved perfect scores on their exams!
  • Two participants have already started their careers in construction.
  • Three participants are interviewing for roles with corporate partners.
  • Three participants received job offers and are studying hard to pass their CSCS tests.

We also identified a need for career-specific English lessons to better support young people from diverse backgrounds, ensuring they have the language skills necessary to succeed in our courses. We’re very pleased to being supported by the LCP Foundation to provide this additional service going forward!

There’s more:

  • All participants rated the course 10/10.
  • They all rated their feelings about the construction industry 10/10.
  • They all expressed a strong desire to expand their knowledge in the sector, rating it 10/10.

This CSCS course has equipped young people with the qualifications, resources, and industry experience they need to start their careers in construction. At Drive Forward, we are dedicated to providing industry-specific courses that offer the necessary tools and opportunities for our young people to thrive.
