At Drive Forward Foundation, we’ve observed a growing interest among our young people in pursuing careers in the security sector. However, obtaining the necessary Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence—a requirement for entering this profession—can be a significant financial barrier. Recognising this challenge, we launched our first in-house SIA course in July 2024, building on the success of our previous in-house CSCS course to enable young people to build fulfilling careers in construction. This initiative provided our young people with a valuable opportunity to gain their SIA licence, opening doors to a wide range of security careers.
Partnering for Success
Our Careers Specialist, Shereen Taha, played a pivotal role in making this course a reality by connecting Drive Forward with Diffusion Elite Security. Thanks to this partnership, we were able to offer a fully funded, two-week SIA course. The response from our young people was overwhelmingly positive. Justin Sesay, Careers Manager at Drive Forward, led the initiative, carefully selecting 13 participants who met the course criteria. Impressively, 30% of the participants were women—a notable achievement in an industry where women represent less than a quarter of the workforce (SGO, 2024).

A Supportive Learning Environment
The course was primarily conducted at Drive Forward’s office, a familiar and safe space for our young people. This setting was particularly beneficial, as it allowed Drive Forward staff to be readily available to support the participants throughout the programme. Running from nine to five each day, the course covered four essential modules: the private security industry, the role of a door supervisor, conflict management, and physical intervention techniques.
Participants also engaged in practical video assessments, where they enacted realistic security scenarios such as conducting searches and escorting individuals. These exercises not only provided hands-on experience but also boosted their confidence in applying their new skills.
Outstanding Results and Positive Feedback
The course concluded in mid-July with a comprehensive test, and we are proud to report that every participant passed all components. As they eagerly await their final test results, the success of the course stands as a testament to the quality and effectiveness of the training provided.
Feedback from the participants further underscores the course’s impact:
- 90% of attendees rated the course as good or excellent.
- 100% found the practical sessions and course materials helpful and informative.
- 90% would recommend the course to others.
This initiative not only equips our young people with the qualifications they need but also empowers them to pursue careers that align with their interests and aspirations. We look forward to continuing to provide such opportunities and making a lasting difference in the lives of those we support.
